Joseph David Martin Born: February 27, 1955 in Spring Valley, IL Died: August 18, 2024 in Sterling, IL Joseph David Martin, 69, longtime alderman and vice mayor for the City of Sterling, died at his home Sunday night, August 18, 2024, from a recurrence of cancer. Joe will be remembered for his passion -- for public service, salesmanship, family, faith, and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. His laughter was deep and unmistakable. His jokes were deliberately corny. And his heart seemed to always be in the right place. Mr. Martin spent his early days in Peoria, the son of Mitchell and Mary Martin, who both preceded him. Valuing education, Joe paid his own way through the private Spaulding High School Academy and then Bradley University. While at Bradley, he met his future wife, Mary Arney Martin, now a retired doctor of audiology in Sterling. Joe and Mary wed on August 14, 1982.
