LaVern Smith Born: June 26, 1933 in Rock Falls, IL Died: June 15, 2024 in Sterling, IL ROCK FALLS - It is with great sadness that the family of LaVern Smith, age 90, announces her passing on Saturday, June 15, 2024. "Kathyern" LaVern Smith was born in Rock Falls, IL to William and Lena (Devers) Hines on June 26, 1933. She graduated from Rock Falls High School with the Class of 1952. LaVern then married Wayne M. Smith on November 7, 1953. He preceded her in death on January 14, 2017, after 63 years of marriage. Shortly after they became empty nesters, LaVern and Wayne began hosting college students over their Thanksgiving break who were attending the University of Chicago. As a family, we enjoyed learning about the different cultures and customs of the students from Thailand, Lebanon, Japan, Venezuela, and India. The students enjoyed themselves so much that they came back for Christmas break as well. Many of them stayed in touch over the years and visited regularly. LaVern was a membe
